disques Music 2.0: where do we go from here?

When the moderator Ralph Simon asks “who bought a CD recently?”, very few people raise their hands. Heartbreaking. Discs are about to die. Very soon.

The yesterday debate between Eric Baptiste, from the CISAC (the international confederation of authors and composers societies) and Gerd Leonhard, music media futurist, had shown two visions of the future in the world of music. And the still controversial debate upon the wish to consume free music and the need to pay the artists. They agreed on the dark future for the record business, and at the same time, on the fact that “music is more popular than ever”. But for Eric Baptiste, music is not and does not have to be free. “Music is sometimes seen as a cost but our job is to protect the value of it”, he insisted. And while Gerd Leonhard compares music with water everybody can drink “without a licence”, Eric Baptiste sees danger in thinking in too broad terms. He wonders if free music is good for creative minds.

“If we could, we would enjoy everything for free”, he said. Utopic.
